Turning the Beer Judging Tables: Strategies for an Inclusive Judging Environment
Beer judging environments have typically presented many barriers to entry for historically excluded groups, leading to an already homogenous community becoming smaller and less diverse in terms of lived experience, palates, and participation. The judging table can already be intimidating enough for new judges. Add layers of covert or overt racism, sexism, ageism (really all the isms) and the judging experience can be stressful and demoralizing. One of the most important steps in creating a more inclusive judging environment is learning not only to identify common macroaggressions and microaggressions but also how to remedy them.
